Prof. Gabrielle Marceau, Counsellor, Legal Affairs Division, World Trade Organisation; Associate Professor of Law at Geneva University.
Building on the discussions developed in the general courses, this course focuses on how the WTO really operates from a legal, political and diplomatic perspective, through an examination of the dispute settlement system underpinning the WTO. Replacing the WTO in the broad institutional context of international economic relations, the course will consider some of the major substantive issues that are addressed in the WTO, such as agriculture, subsidies, standards and regional trade agreements. After a discussion of the core notions and principles governing dispute settlement at the WTO, consideration will be given to certain specific agreements and disputes, thereby allowing for a review of some of the recent WTO disputes that shook the world in recent years. |
